The 5-day nonpayment period is in calendar days (§ 33-1368(G)). If you mail by certified mail, build in the 5-day deemed-receipt period. Week-to-week tenancies need 10 days' notice.

Many month-to-month notices must also end on the last day of a rental period, so if rent is due on the 1st, the safest move-out date is the end of a month. Giving more notice than the minimum is fine; giving less usually makes the notice invalid.
